Debbii Dawson
by phoebe ringler
Debbii Dawson is an artist you should be on the lookout for! She recently opened up for Role Model on his No Place Like Tour. I was absolutely astounded by the performance she put on. With an insanely powerful strange presence, she brought the sound of the 80s back to the stage. We don’t see nearly enough artists in today’s music scene that are influenced by this era of music and she’s bringing it back in the most electric way.
Dawson’s song “You Killed The Music” stood out the most to me during her performance. Her energy was contagious throughout the performance and she was giving the energy of ABBA. She’s bringing so much vibrancy to the music scene and I can't wait to see where her career takes her!

Alessia Cara, Love and Hyperbole
We had the opportunity to attend Alessia Cara’s Press Conference for her new album, Love and Hyperbole!
How did Love and Hyperbole translate into your story writing?
She stated that her lyrics were hyperbolic and helped in soothing sad feelings under the surface. “When you’re in love a lot of those things can feel dramatic, things surrounding love can feel like the end of the world.” The album is more open compared to her past releases and she talked about how she’s becoming more open to accepting love throughout the years.
What was the most impactful part of the production process?
She had the chance to record 90% of the album live with musicians and had a horn section and orchestra. She mentioned how her favorite music was from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and it’s all made live, so she’s always wanted her music to be made that way as well. She talked about how the new album had a different outcome due to this.
Were there any themes that you haven’t explored before?
Yes, there were several themes on the new album that she hadn’t explored before. “Experienced new feelings of love, sense of security and comfort.” She also mentioned how it explores themes of getting older and being more conscious of death and uncomfortable situations.
How did growing up in Toronto influence your songwriting?
“Canada celebrates colors of the mosaic” There are a lot of different types of people there which made her more open to form the way she writes her music. She said that the city is very open and has a sound for music and identity.
Which track feels the most personal and why?
She said that the song that feels the most personal is Fire. It was the first time she’s ever written a love song without fear attached to it. She stated how she usually writes her songs about love from an “angle of negativity”. This song was written in more of a “happy free way, just like a love letter in a lighter sense.”

Dayglow The Tour
by phoebe ringler
I went to so many different tours in 2024 but my most notable show of the year was probably Dayglow/Sun Room. I’d been wanting to see Dayglow for over five years, so it was amazing to finally get to see him live. His debut album, Fuzzybrain, is extremely well put together and it was one of my favorite albums to listen to in 2019/2020. He played all but two songs from this album even though he’s on his fourth album and I loved the fact that even though it’s been so long, he still makes sure to highlight Fuzzybrain as much as possible at his shows. I think that album is just a really huge part of his identity as an artist and I am so happy I could hear it be brought to life after so long. He played several songs from every album which was great because it seems like so many artists fail to highlight every era. He played every single song from his new album. This is also one of the main reasons seeing Dayglow stood out to me. He was the only artist that I’ve seen live this year that had a new album and played the entire thing. I loved that because even though some people may have gone to see him for his older music, they were exposed to what he is currently making as much as they possibly could be. He had great energy all through the show and every single one of the songs he played was even better live. Sun Room was the perfect opener for this tour. I think by opening for Dayglow it exposed them to another type of audience that would really enjoy their music. Their music has evolved so much over the last few years in the best way possible and I think it was great for them to be able to play their new music to so many people who have probably never seen them live before.

Sun Room
Sun Room should definitely be your favorite surf rock band right now. From Southern California, the group is currently on a headlining tour of North America this fall. I have gone to three shows from this tour, but I've seen them live eight times this year. The band went on tour with Inhaler earlier this year, so it’s especially exciting to see them playing headlining shows at the same venues we saw them perform as openers. The energy at their shows is so upbeat and fun, that you’ll never want it to end.
On another note, they just released their newest single, “At Least I Tried” on October 5th, which is the title track for an upcoming EP. The song is about being broke and having fun (#relatable). Truly the best song to listen to after I just used my last two pennies to get tickets and drive over state lines to see them. If you haven’t listened to them already, you should check them out. Two songs I recommend you listen to are Cadillac and Sunset Garage!

Sports Team
by phoebe ringler
In the last few weeks, Sports Team has taken over every last one of my brain cells. I recently saw them open up for Sun Room several times. I was introduced to them at these shows and was in shock by how well they present themselves on stage. The lead singer’s attitude on stage is very unique and I think it sets them apart from other bands. I was surprised to see that they didn’t have more monthly listeners on Spotify because they’re so talented.
The band's sound is alternative rock. They are based in London and the members consist of vocalist Alex Rice, keyboardist Ben Mack, drummer Alex Greenwood, guitarist Henry Young, guitarist Rob Knaggs, and bassist Oli Dewney. “The Game” is one song that really stood out to me but other songs that I would recommend include, “The Drop”, and “Dig!” This band is one that you should be on the lookout for. They really impressed me and were some of the best live performers that I’ve seen all year! Make sure to go check them out!
